This day, that year will look into the important historical events, incidents and major happenings on that particular day of the year. As history keeps inventing itself, we are also keen to rekindle our past to keep our knowledge quotient high. Today in history, i.e. September 3, the following notable events took place.
Roshanara Begum, who was born on September 3, 1617, was among the most powerful women to have lived in India during the Mughal era in the 17th century. The Mughal princess, a brilliant poetess, was the second daughter of Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and Mumtaz Mahal. She played a key role in ensuring that her brother Aurangzeb, Shah Jahan's third son, would succeed to the Mughal throne when the emperor fell ill. Soon after her backing, when Aurangzeb ascended to the throne, she was given the title of Padshah Begum and she became the First Lady of the Mughal Empire. She is said to have been a clever woman with a strong and independent mind. Also, she never married and held some significant political posts in the Mughal empire.
Ferdinand Porsche was born on September 3, 1875 in Germany. He was an automobile engineer who is best known for developing the Lohner-Porsche, the first gasoline-electric hybrid car. He is credited of designing the famous, people's car, Volkswagen Beetle. Interestingly, he also designed a few models of Mercedes-Benz as well as the Benz Tropfenwagen, the first racing car with a mid-engine, rear-wheel drive configuration. Later in 1931, he founded Porsche, the company that still retains his name. Porsche received a fan honorary doctorate degree from the Imperial Technical University in 1917 in recognition of his contribution and achievements. He also received the German National Prize for Art and Science in 1937.
An Indian mountaineer, Malli Mastan Babu was born on this day in 1974 in Andhra Pradesh. Babu was a skilled mountaineer who held a number of records and received several honours. He had accomplished the milestone of being the world's 'fastest seven summiteer' (172 days in 2006, during which he climbed as may as seven summits on seven days of the week in each calendar month). In addition, he was the first person from Andhra Pradesh to climb Mount Everest and the first Indian to reach the top of Mount Vinson Massif, the highest mountain in Antarctica. He tragically went missing in 2015 while scaling the Andes Mountains in Argentina, and was later found dead on March 24.
On September 3, 1995, Pierre Omidyar launched a website named Auction Web, which later developed into the modern eBay. It all began when Omidyar launched eBay and offered a printer for $1 on the website. After a few days went by without any bids, bidders started to pitch in, pushing the price of the printer up to $14.83. Since its founding in 1995, eBay has experienced rapid growth and has become one of the most well-known businesses in history. Over 800 million products are available for sale on eBay at any given moment, and the site has over 162 million active members worldwide.
Skyscrapers Day is observed annually on September 3. The date was chosen to commemorate Louis H Sullivan's birth anniversary—often referred to as the "father of modern skyscrapers". He was a renowned architect who served as the principal architect of a number of well-known buildings, including the Wainwright Building, the Bayard-Condict Building, the Krause Music Store, the Union Trust Building, and the Prudential (Guaranty) Building. Every year, this day is celebrated to honour the architectural marvels that have existed for over a century. On this day, architects who designed the buildings are also acknowledged and honoured for their work and efforts.
